List of Pituitary Gland Diseases

Your pituitary gland is a tiny organ about the size the of a pea and is located at the base of the brain.

The Pituitary Gland is often referred to as the body’s “Master Gland” because it produce hormones that travel throughout the body. The hormones produced by the pituitary gland consist of;

  • Prolactin – Prolactin stimulates the mother’s breast milk to begin after childbirth. It also affects the level of sex hormone in women’s ovaries  and from testes in men.
  • Growth hormone (GH) – GH stimulates childhood growth. In adults Growth Hormone plays an  role for maintaining muscle mass and bone mass. Growth Hormone also affects the way the body distributes fat.
  • Adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) – ACTH hormone stimulates the release of cortisol by the adrenal glands.  Cortisol, is a “stress hormone,” is necessary for our survival. Cortisol helps our body when we are under stress or illness. It also helps maintain blood pressure and blood glucose (sugar) levels.
  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) – TSH hormone stimulates the thyroid gland to release thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones which regulate our body’s energy, metabolism, nervous system, and growth.
  • Luteinizing hormone (LH) – LH stimulates testosterone production in men and egg release (ovulation) in women.
  • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) – FSH hormones promotes sperm production in males and stimulates the ovaries to produce estrogen and develop eggs in females.
  •  Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) – ADH,  is also referred to as vasopressin. ADH hormone regulates water balance in the body.
  • Oxytocin – Oxytocin causes milk to release from the breasts of women after childbirth. Oxytocin is thought to help in the progress of labor. There have been recent theories that Oxytocin also promotes social well being.

As hormones are released by the Pituitary Gland they travel through the body.

The hormones direct, processes or stimulate other glands to produce other hormones.

The pituitary gland makes or stores many different hormones. pituitary gland. When excessive or insufficient hormones are produced by the Pituitary Gland more than a dozen different disorders of the endocrine system can result.
